The Bodhi Tree Bookstore is Closing

The Bodhi Tree Bookstore has been a landmark in Los Angeles since it was founded in 1970 by Dan Morris, Stan Madson and Phil Thompson.

Over the years, it has become a destination for spiritual voyagers, novice and veteran alike. Its many isles and shelves hold magical secrets and ancient knowledge in the form of books, healing incense, scented candles, eclectic musical instruments, many CDs & DVDs, tarot cards, medallions and crystals, to name a few.

The Bodhi Tree Bookstore offers almost daily events or workshops in the building next door. Many healers, spiritual teachers, and authors shared their knowledge, experience and insights in the large, comfortable room that seats approximately 65 people.

I’ve spent many hours wandering through the store, sometimes looking for something specific, and sometimes just looking. I always felt a little better coming out than going in, and in my mind that says a lot about a place.

It is with heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that the Bodhi Tree Bookstore will be closed for business on December 31, 2011, and will have until January 28, 2012 to empty the buildings of bookcases, cabinets and other furniture.

With a great deal of hope and optimism, the owners negotiated for many months to sell and relocate the bookstore, but the offer they accepted was rescinded on October 25th. As a consequence, they have recontacted interested parties to explore and generate a new dialogue. They are committed to keeping the Bodhi Tree legacy alive in the community with a physical store and are currently engaged in serious discussions with two interested groups.

In January 2010 LA Weekly published this article in anticipation of the transition, followed by another from the LA Times.
